Carsten Holler is a multimedia artist who was born in 1961 in Brussels, Belgium. Carsten currently lives and works in Stockholm Sweden. Holler uses the human psyche as one of his mediums. Humans play the role of his subjects since he often uses new media to transform conventional environments/spaces into unconventional situations. Spectator’s interaction with his pieces is a large part of their function and or purpose. One of his pieces consists of large slides in the form of gigantic winding tubes which spectators are invited to slide down. The experience of the rider is an important part of the structure. He uses new media as a tool to investigate how his subjects will be affected by the situation he has invented. One of my favorite pieces by him is his “Mirror Carousel”. He constructed a carousel covered in mirrors and flashing lights at such a speed that it disorients the riding spectator. Spectators coexist in the space with these large installations becoming a part of the exhibition.
