Possible projects with Power Point

If I were to pose a project for my students, I would ask them to create a fictional animal and make a power point presentation about it. I would have them create its habitat, what it eats, how it moves, information about predators etc. This exercise would encourage their curiosity while giving them the opportunity to get familiar with the program.

Another possible project would include having the students pick a place they would eventually want to travel to. It could be a country or Island or city. They would have to make slides about the place's basic information such as population, foods of the culture and ceremonies. They would also include a slide presenting what they see themselves doing in that place such as activities. This project would encourage them to think of their future and gain knowledge of a new place in their world.

Throughlines on Animation Crash Course

1) What compications does time-based work introduce when making art? In other words what elements does the artist have to deal with and think about when creating a time-based piece such as an animation?

2) What kind of insight can an animation give about the artist who created it?

3) Does artwork that isn't time-based have a relevance to time?

Possible Animation Project

Create a stop animation using 4 objects you have available in your backpack. You can create a new sculptural object by combining these items or have them interact with each other in the frames space.

This project would force students to utilize their creativity by making the most of what is readily available to them.

Throughlines relating to Ishu Patel's animation

Throughlines based on "The Memory of Your Touch"

Does the use of technology create a distance between humans when the concept involves personal actions like touching?

Is the use of technology in art slowly replacing traditional methods of artmaking until essentially artforms like painting will die down?

Which medium evokes more emotion for the people of today, live performance? or performance through video where various effects and editing are used?

HTML idea for students

If I was working with students using HTML, I would ask them to set up a blog page containing a small fictional short improvisational story. Throughout the story I would have them make certain sentences a different color using html. The colors would represent the mood of the story in that section. This would introduce a basic understanding of how to use html colors in a creative way.

Crash Course

The Crash Course I attended was intro to Photoshop. If I were to conduct possible lessons they would be...

Create a fictional character that represents your best qualities and place it in an environment containing everything that character would need to survive.

Recreate one of your friends as a fictional character. Think about what visuals would be appropriate to represent thier best qualities. This character can be a collage of things about them or about thier interests, mabe a collage of thier favorite places and or favorite foods.

These assighnment would familarize students with basic tasks in photoshop such as cutting and pasting as well as allow them to visually alter people they are strongly connected to in a positve light. I think this assighnment would be appropriate for children around 7th grade to 9th or 10th.

Sonya Rapoport

Sonya Rapoport is a media artist who focuses on interactive installations. Since the 1970’s she has utilized technology as her medium. She’s been producing work since 1994 and continues to create pieces based on the concepts such as gender, religion, and science. Her work often consists of a humoristic quality, which is the first thing that interested me about her pieces. She often uses parody, mysticism and humor to convey her ideas. The picture above is from her work Arbor erecta. This piece refrences the story of a transsexual change of James from female to male. In her Transgenic Bagel piece, she touches base on the idea of altering genes and the ingestion of medicine to alter one's personality. In this piece the spectator, or participant has a choice of a certain gene that was taken from an animal.

Scott Snibbe's piece Deep Walls, is open to a wide range of possibilites when it comes to creating a throughline. Consisting of a range of elements, it evoks one to think of questions upon more questions. I enjoy the performative, entertainment, and interactive aspects of the piece as well as the use of time, space, and technology to alter and display the human figure. The three possible throughlines or big ideas I have come up with concerning this piece are:

What is the difference between video in performance space and performance in video space?

What does it mean to sucessfully capture the essence of a person or people?

What does it mean to "speak" to the materials in which you work with?
